Vol. 1, Issue 4

At long last, we are pleased to announce that the fourth issue of Turning the Tide has been sent to the presses, and we hope to see hard copies of it sometime this week. This issue deals almost exclusively with abolitionist (anti-death penalty) efforts in Texas. Go check it out:

Read the articles online.

View the high-quality PDF version.

The PDF runs to 14 meg, so you should right click to save.

Even though we'll still give these out for free, we've included a suggested donation price on the cover of this issue. We've done this because 1.) this issue is 8 pages longer than previous issues, and thus was more expensive to print; and 2.) we're trying to raise money for the collective, as well as see if we can't establish a radical bookstore in the center where Tango Tea Room is at.

The Empire and Freedom theme fell short, but we did receive some submissions which bear on it. Hopefully we'll try that again with the next issue.

Look forward to us resuming meetings. Additionally, CHR Media now has its own website, meaning we can stop posting Far Out Films, etc. announcements on the Turning the Tide site.

As always, if you have any interest in getting involved with our publication, please drop us a line. We desparately need more women involved.

Introducing Far Out Film Nights!

Yin Yang Fandango and the Tango Tea Room, in conjunction with CHR Media Collective, present… Far Out Film Nights!

Saturday, August 5, 2006

Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price

WAL-MART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE is a feature length documentary that uncovers a retail giant's assault on families and American values.

The film dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to fight a goliath. A working mother is forced to turn to public assistance to provide healthcare for her two small children. A Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins!

Producer/Director Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films take you on an extraordinary journey that will change the way you think, feel -- and shop.

Description from www.walmartmovie.com

Saturday, August 19, 2006

The Take

In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats, and refuse to leave.

All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act - The Take - has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.

In the wake of Argentina's dramatic economic collapse in 2001, Latin America's most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. The Forja auto plant lies dormant until its former employees take action. They're part of a daring new movement of workers who are occupying bankrupt businesses and creating jobs in the ruins of the failed system.

Description from www.thetake.org

Films run from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Yin Yang Fandango and the Tango Tea Room. Screenings will include a discussion afterward. Come on out and enjoy healthy, delicious food and drink while watching these documentaries.

CHR Media Collective (CHR) is a non-profit media collective based in Corpus Christi, Texas. CHR’s primary goals include creating sustainable media projects and increasing community exposure to democratic and independent media.

Yin Yang Fandango and the Tango Tea Room features an eclectic earth store, tea and espresso bar, and vegetarian café. It is located at 505 Water St., behind Memorial Coliseum.
Turning the Tide Call for Submissions

Turning the Tide is a collectively run, progressive/radical news magazine focusing on political, economic, and social themes relevant to Texas. Although we are not explicitly anarchist or Marxist, we try to endorse a radical left-wing perspective, as well as embrace advocacy journalism to support certain views and causes. We are currently based in Corpus Christi, publish bi-monthly, and have grown tremendously since publication of our first issue in February 2006.

Turning the Tide would like to expand both its writer base and distribution capabilities to other Texas cities. We have been in contact with activists and organizations in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Laredo, and have continually ramped up our efforts in Corpus Christi. We invite writers, activists, and artists living in Texas to contribute to all future issues. Ultimately, we aspire to produce a publication that unites and promotes various left-wing and progressive causes throughout Texas, as well as exposes a general readership—rather than strictly activists and progressives—to left-wing analysis.

In terms of content, we envision covering three broad bases:

We would like to include coverage of national and international events that are treated poorly in the media, and from a radical left-wing perspective.

We would like to give special attention to issues and causes that deal overtly with communities in Texas.

We would especially like to share the experiences of other radical/progressive groups in Texas, to provide ideas and inspiration.

In addition to this, we would like to provide something of an organizational apparatus for activists and organizers throughout Texas, such as by promoting events, certain campaigns, and new organizations. Another project we have in mind is to compile and include a directory in the back pages of each issue that includes contact information, by city and interest, for radical and progressive groups throughout the state. (FNB chapters, infoshops, women's shelters, anti-war and labor groups, and so on.) The goal of these listings should be to reduce a sense of powerlessness by helping people organize within their communities.

If you would like to get involved with this project, we would love to hear from you. We strongly encourage more women to contribute. The theme for our next issue is Empire and Freedom, and we hope to see your submissions that bear on this theme.

To learn more about Turning the Tide, visit us on the web at:

http://www.tttnews.org/

Or email our Google Group at:

turningthetide [at] googlegroups.com

July/August Submissions

As part of our efforts to get Turning the Tide on a normal publication schedule, we are now welcoming submissions for our July/August issue (Vol. 1, Issue 4). And because the immigration-themed issue we're currently working on is coming together pretty well, we have decided to experiment some more with producing a thematic issue.

In honor of July 4, the theme for this next issue is Freedom and Empire, which is intentionally broad. Some possible topics that we came up with in a few minutes include:

The War in Iraq

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Role of the media

Treatment of soldiers

U.S. interventionism

...And the list goes on. Of course, contributors are free to write about whatever they want to. We thought we'd try this theme out, though.

This time, let's try to get the submissions in by Tuesday, August 1. This gives everyone nearly a month and a half to submit something. If you're interested in writing something and simply need a shove (or someone breathing down your neck) to get on the ball, then I'm sure someone will be happy to oblige. Even if we allow for some generous extensions, this deadline should go a long way toward getting us on track. (Our ultimate goal should be to publish the January/February 2007 issue near the end of December 2006, not mid-way through February 2007.)

In addition to this, we would also like to start a directory of radical and progressive organizations in the back pages of the July/August issue. We do not have any criteria in mind yet, but please drop us a comment or an email if you are involved with or know of a group that might be interested in a free listing. The goal of these listings should be to reduce a sense of powerlessness by helping people organize within their communities.

March/April Issue is Available!

After much dawdling, the March/April issue is available online (PDF; link opens in new window), and printed copies should appear on May Day. With any luck, we'll be able to distribute them in the Hector P. Garcia Plaza at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, which will coincide with an immigrant solidarity lunch put on by Dr. Christina Kirklighter.

The design for this issue is absolutely beautiful. We owe Candy BIG TIME for the effort she poured into this: She and I pieced the whole thing together in about 7 hours, finishing around midnight. There is an enormous difference between this issue and February's, and hopefully it will attract new writers and submissions to the fold.

AZS also deserves credit for the awesome cover image he drew. His drawing highlights a global problem with South Texan flair.

Let's try to get submissions in sooner next time, though. Anyway, feel free to throw the link to the new issue around.

It seems that the March issue is running behind schedule, and that we will not have it completed until April. As as a result, we might have to collapse the two into a March-April issue.

First Issue is Out!

Our first issue has been out for a while now, and feedback of any sort would be great, even if it's just to point out typos. For those who are interested in contributing to the March issue (well, hopefully it'll be in March!), we've been trying to deal specifically with health and demography issues. Of course, any submissions in tune with the mission statement are fine by us.
