As part of our efforts to get Turning the Tide on a normal publication schedule, we are now welcoming submissions for our July/August issue (Vol. 1, Issue 4). And because the immigration-themed issue we're currently working on is coming together pretty well, we have decided to experiment some more with producing a thematic issue.

In honor of July 4, the theme for this next issue is Freedom and Empire, which is intentionally broad. Some possible topics that we came up with in a few minutes include:

  • The War in Iraq
  • The Israeli-Palestinian conflict
  • Role of the media
  • Treatment of soldiers
  • U.S. interventionism

...And the list goes on. Of course, contributors are free to write about whatever they want to. We thought we'd try this theme out, though.

This time, let's try to get the submissions in by Tuesday, August 1. This gives everyone nearly a month and a half to submit something. If you're interested in writing something and simply need a shove (or someone breathing down your neck) to get on the ball, then I'm sure someone will be happy to oblige. Even if we allow for some generous extensions, this deadline should go a long way toward getting us on track. (Our ultimate goal should be to publish the January/February 2007 issue near the end of December 2006, not mid-way through February 2007.)

In addition to this, we would also like to start a directory of radical and progressive organizations in the back pages of the July/August issue.  We do not have any criteria in mind yet, but please drop us a comment or an email if you are involved with or know of a group that might be interested in a free listing. The goal of these listings should be to reduce a sense of powerlessness by helping people organize within their communities.
