Where we've been, where we are, and where we'd like to go PDF Print E-mail

In our last issue (Vol. 1, Issue 2), we transitioned from a late night Kinkos experiment to a more refined newsletter. For this issue, we’ve upped the ante yet again by converting Turning the Tide into a news magazine. And with this conversion come several important changes and announcements:

We now have a new website which includes all of our content in easy-to-read web format, so you’ll need to update your bookmarks. This also means that we now accept submissions through our website’s forums rather than our Google Group. To get involved, visit us online at: http://www.tttnews.org/

Because Turning the Tide now appears in magazine format, we can include more content per issue. For our next issue, we’ve also decided to experiment with a theme: Empire and Freedom. We would really like to see your original articles, essays, poetry, comics, artwork, etc., especially as they bear on this theme. We strongly encourage more women to get involved, too.

In addition to this, we’ve started transitioning to a more stable organizational model. At our June 3 meeting, we resolved to use the model agreed upon by the Church of a High Resolution (CHR), the media collective which publishes Turning the Tide, as well integrate our membership into the CHR. Although the model needs to be reworked and we still have a long way to go, overall this will allow us to operate more smoothly and provide direction to Turning the Tide.

Starting with this issue, we now accept advertisements in order to defray printing costs. If you are interested in placing an ad or helping us distribute, contact our ad manager Sandra Campos at:

And finally, we would like to expand both our writer base and distribution capabilities to other Texas cities, as well as begin providing free directory listings to radical and progressive organizations, by city, in the back pages of Turning the Tide. The goal of these listings would be to reduce a sense of powerlessness by helping people organize within their communities. We feel that, with a little help from our readers, this directory has enormous potential to build bridges between Texas activists and organizations who have overlapping concerns.
